[ He takes the plate with a brightening of his gaze before he turns up his nose. ]

Shouyou and your team would disagree. [ Dryly teasing, but the murmur that comes from him after is far more genuine, honest. ] But I know you can be.

[he snorts, taking his own plate and moving to sit at the table.]

Don't you dare tell them, I have a reputation to uphold.

I doubt they'd believe me.

[ But the response gets a huff of laughter from Kenma as he follows, sitting across from his boyfriend. It doesn't take him long to start digging in, stuffing his cheeks with numerous spoonfuls, speaking around it seemingly without care for politeness. ]

Did you have a specific place in mind to go? For the present you mentioned.

[pfffft.]

I think you're right. I don't think anyone who's met me understands how you put up with me.

[he digs into his cake, but without kenma's enthusiasm. it's cute, how he stuffs his cheeks almost like a chipmunk or other adorable, small animal. truthfully he's just as excited for the sweet treat, but the table manners his mother spent so much time scaring into him are hard to forget.]

Ah, there's...a small jewelry shop in the shopping district that I had in mind.

People could say the same the other way. I'm sure they have to Kuro before. [ Along with the fact that he spoils him, lets him get away with things he shouldn't. He knows he isn't the most easy to get along with because of his apathy and personality in general.

Kenma's gaze flicks up at that, eyebrows lifting in his curiosity. ]

We're getting jewellery then?

[he looks perplexed.]

But you're so cute. It'd be like getting frustrated with a kitten.

[and oh, there's his blush again, he hadn't missed that.]

Um, not anything flashy, but...yes.

[ His brows furrow, a surprised sort of indignation appearing on his face in the face of his own embarrassment. ]

I-... I am not.

[ Kenma picks at a piece of his dessert for a moment contemplatively, and then scoops it into his mouth. ]

I've never worn some. It'll take getting used to, but it should be fine.

[he smirks.]

Totally are. I bet anyone on your team would agree. And don't worry, I promise it won't be something heavy or cumbersome that'll get in your way.

That's hardly fair, they'd agree just because we're Nekoma.

[ Stabbing at his food now, puffy cheeks noticeably flushed. ]

Okay. I'm glad. It would be tiring to wear something like that.

[he makes a face at him for being difficult.]

I don't want you to make you tired, so we'll make sure that it works for you. It'd be kind of a bad gift otherwise.

[ Kenma frowns, gaze shifting from one side to the next before he stretches his legs out under the table, entwining them with the other's. ]

I just don't get why you think I'm cute. [ He sounds apologetic about it though. ]

I know. You're always considerate of me. I appreciate it, even if I don't say it often.

[kenma's legs are shorter than his are, so he extends his legs to help fascilitate the contact. it's nice to be able to touch him when they're both busy eating their cakes.]

Well, small things are usually pretty sure. [sorry, it's true.] You like warm places, and things that are too big for you, and you get really into the games you play and kind of excited when you see Hinata. [a helpless shrug.] It's cute.

[he rests his foot against kenma's ankle.] You're welcome. It comes easy.

[ He's pleased by it, the warmth and comfort that contact between them gives, though the satisfied expression soon morphs into one of being distinctly flustered.

Fidgeting with his spoon, tucking hair behind an ear with his other hand. ] I... I get excited when I see you, too.

[ Mumbled. ]

And I think you're cute in your own ways.

[ugh that's so cute. it makes him blush, and he wasn't conceited enough to say as much out loud, but it makes him happy to hear all the same. it's a different kind of excitement, to be sure, but still; to know that someone is happy to see him makes his heart feel warm.

and then he scowls, lips pursing unhappily.]

What's cute about a mean beanpole like me?

You sound like Shouyou. That's something he'd call you.

[ But it's a compliment, kind of, probably not in Tsukishima's mind. Kenma looks on the verge of laughter, the sound in his eyes if not made out loud. ]

When you're listening to a song you really like you close your eyes for a while and look really peaceful. You get really happy when you get to eat your favourite cake. If you're embarrassed your ears and the back of your neck turns red.

[ It seems like there could be more that he could say, but he stops. ]

Maybe calling you cute isn't exactly right but... Those are little things I've noticed. Things I like about you.

I'm pretty sure he's called me that before.

[but hinata is the last thing on his mind when kenma starts saying such sweet things. and the way his eyes sparkle, the way he doesn't quite look at him...what did he do to deserve someone like this? someone who didn't just seem him as mean and caustic, but who he was underneath all of that.

and just like kenma predicted, the back of his neck and his ears are so flushed that they feel hot.]

The things that I said were cute about you...those are things I like about you too. [he ducks his head over his cake.] Thank you.

[ See, when he glances up and notices the small signs of Tsukishima's embarrassment, Kenma can't help but call him cute, in his mind if not out loud.

Shifting his feet up so he can prop them on the other's lap with a playful glimmer in his gaze, he smiles just barely, the curve of his lips almost hidden as he scoops another piece of food into his mouth. ]

Thanks, too. I'm, uhm. I'm glad we get to spend today together.

[ Even if Christmas isn't usual that big of a deal for him, it feels... more special like this. ]

[it's so cute when kenma smiles, and even after dating for a few months, it still makes his heart flutter in his chest like a caged butterfly, especially when accompanied by the obvious pleasure from enjoying his favorite treat.]

Me too. My family stopped doing much for Christmas when my brother moved out, so it's...nice, to do something for the holiday for a change.

I never really did things with my parents much. Kuro would always be the one dragging me out or over to his place on holidays. [ Though it might sound like it's an annoyance, Kenma is decidedly glad for it. Holly Heights has made him more appreciative of his childhood friend, not wanting to take what they have for granted as he thinks he had before.

He glances up toward Tsukishima and then away to the side, lips pursed in a semblance of thought. ] Now that we're together, we can do a lot of things like this. Celebrating holidays and special occasions.

Mm, we...used to do holiday things, all four of us, but after I had my falling out with my brother, he didn't come home to celebrate after moving out. It felt wrong to do things with just the three of us, so it just sort of stopped.

[even though they've been together for a while, he doesn't think he's told kenma the whole story about akiteru. not because he doesn't trust him, but just because it feels...strangely pathetic, like he's worried kenma might scoff at how something like that could leave such a scar on him. it's a blanket fear that extends to anyone who might hear, which is precisely why he doesn't talk about it.

but thinking about celebrating with kenma is a much happier thought, and he lets his lips quirk up in response to his words.]

I like it. Getting gifts for you and doing things that I associate with family. [like sitting at the kotatsu and eating oranges as they wait for the new year, eating cake on birthdays and exchanging gifts at christmas. it's like building traditions, and starting a family that's his.]
